Hand-selected Diamond

Every diamond we use at Van der Veken is first extensively examined. Our diamond experts check each stone not only for the 4 C's, but also for things that cannot be found on the certificate. We check for visible impurities, that there are no shadows in the diamond and that the stone contains "fire" and is vibrant.

An engagement ring is more than a piece of jewelry. It is a promise. It symbolizes a unique love story. That's why every Van der Veken engagement ring is completely customized. You choose the ring design, the metal and the diamond.

After you order your engagement ring, our Master Goldsmiths go to work. Your ring is carefully made entirely by hand in our Antwerp workshop. Meanwhile, our diamond experts search for the stone of your choice.

Engagement Ring FAQs

On which hand is an engagement ring worn?

Traditionally, the engagement ring is worn on the left ring finger. The tradition of wearing a wedding ring on this finger goes back to the ancient Egyptians. They believed that a vein ran from that finger directly to the heart.

In the 20th century, the custom arose of wearing the engagement ring on the right and the wedding ring on the left after marriage. Nowadays, the two rings are often worn on the same finger. So there are no musts. Practically, most ladies prefer to wear the ring on the non-dominant hand. (So left for right-handed people.)

A tip for ladies whose fingers shrink and expand a lot according to temperature: the dominant hand is usually 1 size larger. An engagement ring that fits well on the non-dominant hand in the summer will often fit perfectly on the dominant hand in the winter.

How much does an engagement ring cost?

An engagement ring can cost as much or as little as you want. The rule of thumb of two or three months' salary is still often used, but is certainly not a requirement. However, it is important to roughly set a budget in advance. That will help your search for the perfect engagement ring several steps ahead.

What is an engagement ring?

An engagement ring is a ring given by one partner to the other to propose marriage. This tradition is centuries old and started in 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gifted a ring with a diamond to his fiancée, Mary of Burgundy. The diamond, as the hardest natural material, symbolized indestructible love. This custom was quickly adopted by the nobility and, since the early 20th century, when diamonds became more available, by the rest of the population.

Of course, an engagement ring does not have to contain a diamond, although this is very often the case. Other gemstones, such as sapphire and ruby, are also often used. Engagement rings without stones are also possible.
