How do I maintain my jewelry?
Jewelry is made to stand the test of time, but it requires attention to maintain its original brilliance.
The following tips will keep your jewelry looking like new for a lifetime:
Never wear your jewelry when doing heavy work.
Never wear your jewelry when cleaning. The chemicals can corrode the gold.
Always store your jewelry separately. This way you avoid scratches. Preferably keep them in the original box in which the jewel was delivered.
Clean all your jewelry regularly.
Have your jewelry checked annually by a professional. This will prevent loose stones and damage to the jewelry.
Jewelry with gemstones has a number of tiny nooks and crannies where dirt and dust accumulate. Over time, this reduces the brilliance of the stones. To avoid this, you should clean them about every other month:
Make a lather of warm water and soap. When choosing the soap, consider the type of gemstone. Diamond, ruby and sapphire are hard stones and can tolerate a firm soap. Emerald, aquamarine and morganite are more brittle and therefore should be cleaned with a gentler soap.
Use an old, soft toothbrush to apply soapy water to the jewel and clean it. Concentrate especially on the settings around the stones.
Rinse the jewelry thoroughly to remove all soap and dirt. Then dry with a hair dryer or a soft cloth.
